RE 301 - Term Essay
Each student shall compose a brief essay that summarizes the research and
conclusions for his or her final class presentation. The essay should be
approximately 3700 to 4000 words or about 8 pages of 12 point text, excluding the

- THESIS and CONTENT -- 0 to 25 points
The essay has a thesis—a single, central point that is interesting,
original, striking and substantial. The central idea is developed in the
essay through well-chosen, appropriate, concrete details that show
originality and freshness. Author shows rather than merely tells.
Generalizations and assertions are defended. Arguments are logical.
- INCORPORATES BIBLICAL MATERIAL -- 0 to 25 points
Cites specific biblical material. Uses biblical material to argue build and
sustain the argument. Uses the biblical text in such a way as to acknowledge
its unique historical context.
- COMPREHENSIVE -- 0 to 25 points
The essay demonstrates a comprehensive and deep investigation into the

Citations of commentaries, articles, and other sources are properly
formatted in either Turabian or Chicago Manual of Style format. The
bibliography is properly formatted.
QUALITY OF WRITING
- FORMAL MATTERS -- 0 TO -15 points
Points will be subtracted for errors in grammar (comma splices,
fragments, fused sentences, agreement, etc.), spelling, and mechanics
(margins, format, etc.).
