Texas Tenors will open 2010-11 Artist Series
The Texas Tenors, featuring Waverly native and former Wartburg adjunct voice instructor John Hagen, will open next year's Artist Series. They are booked for performances in Neumann Auditorium on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25. The male vocal trio is currently performing in Las Vegas after placing among the top acts in this fall's "America's Got Talent" television series.
Christmas with Wartburg tickets still available
Complimentary faculty/staff tickets are still available for the 7 p.m. performance of Christmas with Wartburg on Sunday, Dec. 6. Employees are entitled to two complimentary tickets and can purchase two additional tickets at the Information Desk in Saemann Student Center.
Enjoy a festive meal
Prime-rib dinners will be served before each Christmas with Wartburg performance at a cost of $22 per person. Diners can attend a meal without purchasing tickets for the performance. Dinners will be served in Knights Ballroom at 5:30 pm. Friday, Dec. 4; noon Sunday, Dec. 6; and 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Purchase tickets at the Information Desk. IPTV to air Christmas with Wartburg 2007
Iowa Public Television will air the 2007 performance of Christmas with Wartburg performance on IPTV.1 at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, and on World.3 at 6 p.m. on Christmas Day.
Extreme fitness class starts Nov. 30 at The W
A 13-week O'Connell Extreme Fitness (OXF) session will begin Monday, Nov. 30, at The W. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday and are offered from 5:30 to 6:35 a.m. or noon to 1 p.m. Cost is $375 for W members and $400 for non-members. Register at the Welcome Desk.

Brokering service set for Nov. 21
A service scripted by Herb Brokering himself will celebrate his life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, preceded by a one-hour visitation. Brokering, a 1945 alumnus, was a hymnwriter, poet and author. Shortly before his death on Nov. 7, he established the Herbert and Lois Brokering Healing Arts Endowment Fund at Wartburg to support activities promoting the healing arts. Buy one less Christmas gift this year
Faculty and staff are invited to join Campus Ministry in the Advent Conspiracy, a grassroots movement that refocuses Christmas by saying “no” to consumption and “yes” to compassion. The challenge is to buy one less Christmas gift this year and give that money to people in need. St. Elizabeth Week, Nov. 15-21
St. Elizabeth Week, Nov. 15-21, coincides with Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, and includes service-related activities planned by the Volunteer Action Center, Habitat for Humanity, Manna, Campus Ministry, Student Senate and Students for Peace and Justice. The week is named for St. Elizabeth, who lived at the Wartburg Castle in the 1200s as the wife of Ludwig of Thuringia. Following his death, Elizabeth became Germany’s first female Franciscan. Her life was characterized by concern for the hungry, sick and poor. She died in 1231 was canonized in 1235 by the Roman Catholic Church. Events include:
Blood Drive today – Stop by the Chapel Commons until 5:30 p.m. today to donate to Tri-Beta’s Blood Drive for the Blood Center of Iowa.
Food Drive Competition – Faculty/staff members are asked to provide non-perishable food items, paper products and toiletries to the Waverly Food Pantry. If employees provide more items than students, they will receive bragging rights for the year and a dessert reception. Drop off items at the Center for Community Engagement. Ethicist to speak at convo – Ethicist Dr. Brent Waters will discuss “Remaining Human in a Posthuman World” at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in McCaskey Lyceum. Material prepared by Dr. Jeff Stein, R.J. McElroy Chair & Executive-in-Residence in Communication Arts, appeared on the CBS News television program "Sunday Morning" on Oct. 18. The audio and photographic material was from the WHO radio barn dance in the 1930s, and came from the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting collection.
Dr. Neil Martinsen-Burrell and Prof. Jennifer Posthast, assistant professors of mathematics, along with Dr. Mariah Birgen, associate professor of mathematics, received $887 to attend the Teaching Quantitative Reasoning through Civic Issues in St. Paul, Minn. In November.
