Women win second consecutive indoor track title
The Wartburg women’s track and field team won its second consecutive national indoor track title Saturday at the NCAA Division III Championships in Greencastle, Ind. The Knights won the long jump and the 4x400 events and compiled 33 points to overtake the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which was second with 29. www.go-knights.net/cms/Article.aspx?ID=4164

Memorial service Tuesday for longtime Wartburg employee, neighbor
Deleva Oppermann, whose involvement in the Wartburg College community spanned more than 62 years, died Friday, March 12, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community. She and her husband, the late Earnest F. Oppermann (who would have celebrated his 93rd birthday today), moved to Waverly in 1948, when he began a 34-year career at the college as dean of students, head baseball coach and physical education professor. Deleva spent 27 years as Wartburg’s head telephone switchboard operator. When she retired in 1984, the switchboard had moved from Vollmer Hall to the Student Union, and she received the old Vollmer Hall switchboard as a parting gift. In 2001, she was honored with the Wartburg Medal in recognition of her service to the college and its students. Deleva was a longtime member and former president of Wartburg Women. She was also a college neighbor, occupying the home she and her husband built on Third Street, NW, now across the street from Löhe Hall. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Burial will be in Strawberry Point at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, followed by a 4 p.m. memorial service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. kaisercorson.com/_mgxroot/page_10732.php

V-Week activities under way
V-Week activities March 15-20 are part of a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. A “Paint the Campus Red” event begins at 8:15 p.m. tonight. A panel discussion about local violence and support is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in McCaskey Lyceum. Psalm 149, a dance group, will perform during a V-Day Eucharist at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Wartburg Chapel. A cast of 31 students under the direction of senior Kate Arnold will present the Vagina Monologues at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday in McCaskey Lyceum. Tickets, T-shirts, buttons and silent auction items will be available throughout the week at the V-Day table in Saemann Student Center.

Convocation Tuesday will focus on peace
Norwegian scholar and visiting lecturer Dr. Birgit Brock-Utne will speak at convocation Tuesday, March 16. Her address, “Education for a Culture of Peace in a Globalized World,” will begin at 11:30 a.m. in McCaskey Lyceum. Brock-Utne is a professor at the University of Oslo’s Institute for Educational Research and an internationally recognized scholar in peace studies and peace education. Oregon leader will receive Graven Award Thursday
Oregon attorney Lane Shetterly, who has provided distinguished service to his state, his community and his church, will receive this year’s Graven Award at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 18, in the Wartburg Chapel. Comedy jugglers will conclude Artist Series season Thursday
The 2009-10 Wartburg Artist Series season will conclude Thursday, March 18, with a 7:30 p.m. performance by the Gizmo Guys in Neumann Auditorium. Up to two tickets for kids 12 and younger are available for $2 each with the purchase of one adult ticket. A family buffet is available in the Mensa, beginning at 5:15 p.m. Price is $5.75 for ages 5-12, $1.50 for children under 5 and $10 for adults. New art exhibit will open Friday
“Catch and Release,” an exhibit of hand-colored nature photographs by Greg Tiburzi, will be on display March 19-April 23 in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Gallery of Bachman Fine Arts Center. The photos depict Bear Creek near Decorah. www.wartburg.edu/Article.aspx?ID=4162

Tuition set for 2010-11
The Wartburg Board of Regents recently set tuition, room and board rates for 2010-11.  The information is posted at www.wartburg.edu/finaid/ . It was also mailed to parents and e-mailed to students.

Culture Week begins Sunday
Wartburg international students and organizations are preparing a festive and educational celebration of Culture Week, March 21-27. The week will begin with a Nationality Table Fair and Food Tasting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, March 21, in Knights Ballroom. Cost is $5 for adults, $2 for children 5-12, and $10 for the whole family. This event replaces the Culture Dinner of past years and involves displays, games, performances, food samples, and a reception-style interaction with students. Culture Week performances are scheduled for Saturday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Neumann Auditorium. Admission is a suggested donation of $2 per person or $5 for the whole family, with proceeds to benefit Haitian Earthquake Relief.

Student Senate collecting items for Haiti
Student Senate is collecting items for health kits to send to Haiti. The following items can be dropped off in the Senate Office in Saemann Student Center: dark-colored hand towels, dark-colored wash cloths, 4-5 oz. soap bars in original wrapping, adult-sized toothbrushes in original wrapping, sturdy combs, metal nail files or nail clippers and Band-Aids (preferably 1/2'' to 3/4''). Climate change expert will speak at March 23 convocation
Dr. James Hansen,
head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City, will speak on the science and politics of climate change Tuesday, March 23. His convocation address will begin at 11:30 a.m. in Neumann Auditorium. Hansen has testified before congress on climate change and developed global climate models. He is a native of Denison, Iowa, and earned all of his academic degrees at the University of Iowa, where he studied under noted physicist Dr. James Van Allen. Hansen’s first book, Storms of My Grandchildren: The Truth About the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity www.stormsofmygrandchildren.com, was published in December 2009.

Students organize Haiti fundraiser
Students will sponsor a fundraising dinner and silent auction on Tuesday, March 23, to benefit the American Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. “A Knight for Haiti” will begin at 6 p.m. in the Heritage and St. Elizabeth rooms with a silent auction and live music by Festeburg, a male vocal group. Faculty members to perform in March 23 recital
Dr. Ted Reuter, piano, Dr. Eric Wachmann, clarinet, and Dr. Janice Wade, violin, will present a faculty music recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, in Orchestra Hall.

Purple footprints identify Lenten stations
Purple footprints in the Wartburg chapel and Saemann Student Center identify a nearby Lenten Journey reflection station. Each station offers participants a way to enter into the story of Lent through a different sense—sharing what they are giving up or taking on, writing a letter to God and nailing it to the cross, holding coins and pondering Judas’ betrayal of Jesus, and many more.

Salvadoran composer here March 25-27
Salvadoran composer Guillermo Cuéllar will be on campus March 25-27. His “La Misa Popular Salvadoreña,” composed in the late 1970s in collaboration with fellow composers, theologians and martyr Archbishop Oscar Romero, is sung throughout the Spanish-speaking world. Portions of the mass are included in Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the newest ELCA worship resource. Cuéllar will speak chapel on Friday, March 26 and participate in the Salvadoran Folk Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 27, in the chapel. Both events are open to the campus and the public. Cuéllar’s visit is made possible by the Herbert and Cora Moehlmann Chaplaincy Endowed Chair in partnership with St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. Wartburg part of virtual college fair next week
Wartburg will participate in College Week Live, a virtual college fair, Wednesday and Thursday, March 24-25. The fair is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and includes online booths from hundreds of colleges, as well as presentations that cover a wide range of college admissions topics. Wartburg student Caitlyn Roe will be available for live chats, starting at 7:30 p.m. on March 24. www.collegeweeklive.com

College partners with KWWL-TV for “Best of Class”
Wartburg will partner with KWWL-TV, Waterloo, on its 2010 “Best of the Class” promotion. Now in its 26th year, the promotion recognizes outstanding seniors from as many as 118 high schools in the KWWL viewing area. The students will gather for a luncheon on campus Sunday, May 2. Vignettes featuring each student will air on KWWL’s morning, 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts, beginning May 10. President Darrel Colson will provide the introduction each televised segment. “Best of the Class” has recognized 4,100 outstanding seniors.

Babysitter Training Class will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 20 in the large athletic conference room at The W. The class is open to ages 11 and older and costs $40. Lunch is available at the Zesty Orange or participants can bring their own lunch.
Triathlon Class will offer a free introductory session Tuesday, March 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the wet classroom. The class will be offered March 16–June 1 with Tuesday evening sessions from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and pool time on Saturday mornings. Cost is $65 for members and $100 for non-members.
Self Defense Training for Women will be offered April 12,14,19 and 21 from 7 to 8 p.m. in Walker Wrestling Room. Cost is $26. Participants will learn simple, effective skills which may help to prevent or survive an assault.

Granny D dies at 100
Doris “Granny D” Haddock, who spoke at a November 2007 Wartburg convocation, died March 9 in Dublin, N.H. Haddock was 97 when she visited Wartburg and celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 24. She made national headlines at the age of 89 during her walk across the country to promote campaign finance reform.

V-Day Panel Discussion – The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum, focusing on local issues of abuse and including sexual violence statistics from the college and anonymous personal stories of people in the Wartburg Community.  Panelists include Dr. Peter Nash, Dr. Debra Loers, Stephanie Newsom, Dr. Penni Pier, aluma Sonci Kingery, and student Olivier Lusamba.

Transfer Visit Day – The Admissions Office will host this event for students interested in transferring to Wartburg.

Phil and Lit program – Senior Jenny Kordick will speak on "Lessons About the Environment from my Semester in the Galapagos Islands” at Friday’s Wartburg Philosophical and Literary Society meeting. The gathering begins at 4 p.m. in the north room of Joe's KnightHawk. Faculty, staff, students and the community are welcome.

Dance Marathon – Wartburg's second annual Dance Marathon will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Levick Arena. Funds raised will benefit the Children's Miracle Network and the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

Vagina Monologues – This final V-Week event begin at 2 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum under the direction of senior Kate Arnold. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for Wartburg students with an ID.

Recitals – Dani Johnson and Jessie Wetherell will perform their senior vocal recital at 3 p.m. in Orchestra Hall; Jessica McClellan will perform her senior recital at 5 p.m. in Orchestra Hall.

Cabaret/Drag Show – Wartburg Alliance sponsors this event, which begins at 7 p.m. in Neumann Auditorium and features professional drag queens and kings as well as Wartburg performers. Admissions is $5 for community members and $2 for students.


SUNDAY (March 21)
Sunday Worship, 10:30 a.m., Wartburg Chapel – Pastor Brian Beckstrom will speak, and a student worship band will provide music leadership.

Leadership and Service Awards – Students, faculty and staff will be recognized for their leadership and service at 2 p.m. in McCaskey Lyceum, followed by a dessert reception in the Castle Room.

Congratulations to Annual Fund director Kendra Merfeld and her husband, Steve, on the birth of their first child, Merrick James Merfeld. He was born March 12 at 2:01 p.m., weighing 7 pounds, 12.1 ounces and measuring 21 inches long.

Sympathies to a colleague
Keep the family of Lori Poehler, creative services manager, in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the death of Loretta Poehler, 100, grandmother of Lori’s husband, Mark. Loretta died March 10 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

Applications for Wartburg College Student Research Fellowships are due Friday, March 19. These fellowships are open to all students. Applications require authorship by the proposing student and a letter of support from the sponsoring faculty member. FACULTY PROFESSIONAL NOTES
Dr. Neil Martinsen-Burrell, assistant professor of mathematics, received $1,509 as a Technology in Teaching grant.
 
Dr. Jeff Stein, R.J. McElroy Chair & Executive-in-Residence in Communication Arts, discussed the impact of the tea party movement in an extended interview on radio station KMA-AM in Shenandoah on March 5. Stein talked about that and other political issues during his weekly radio segments that same week on WMT-AM in Cedar Rapids and KASI-AM in Ames.

Mayor to host Thursday meeting on flood plan
Waverly Mayor Bob Brunkhorst will host a community meeting Thursday to discuss Waverly’s Community Action Plan and how individuals can prepare for a future flood event. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Waverly Public Library as part of National Flood Safety Awareness Week. City officials and representatives of the National Weather Service, Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management will be available to answer questions.

Help Waverly Pet Rescue secure a grant
Waverly Pet Rescue is competing for grant money offered by animalrescuesite.com, based on online votes. Individuals can vote every day through April 18. Since the voting began in January, Waverly Pet Rescue has gone from #38 to #13 in Iowa. Additional votes will help the group secure a grant. Vote at
